Hello everyone. This is a reminder to finish your research over the following break. In class, we researched a topic that the class will be presenting on January 7. Your group should have assigned individual research to each student. When we return on January 3, I will check to make sure everyone in the group has researched and assign a homework grade for it. Remember that you must finish your research by the end of the holidays. The next class day will be to create a presentation with your group. If you have any questions, please email me. Also, please check your emails over the break to keep in touch with your group members. Happy Holidays!

AAHS: Prohibition
Hello everyone! Today we evaluated the 18th Amendment and the Volstead Act in order to determine the problems with both laws during the 1920s. We also viewed clips from Prohibition by Ken Burns to evaluate the enforcement of the law. At the end of class, the class tried to create a better version of the Prohibition Law.
For homework, you are to read the article on Prohibition that I have handed out during the class. Once you read it, please write a paragraph on whether Prohibition was a good attempt to reform morality in the United States or whether it was a total failure. Please support your argument with evidence. Additionally, please remember that the article you are reading is biased because the author claims that Prohibition was a failure. There will be a "pop quiz" during the next class relating to the topics that we have learned so far (Red Scare, trials of the 1920s, and Prohibition).
Furthermore, the revisions with your muckraker papers are due by Friday. Please remember that I will not ask to collect these papers; it is your responsibility to hand in the revision to me. Additionally, your next test will be on January 9. Have a great day!

AAHS: Innocence Project
Hello everyone! Today we discussed several court cases during the 1920s. We first analyzed the Sacco and Vanzetti case. We analyzed the background of the case and assessed the evidence from the prosecution and the defense. We then developed our own opinions on whether we believe the two Italian anarchists were innocent or guilty depending on the evidence. Most of you believed that Nicola Sacco was guilty, and the Bartolomeo Vanzetti was innocent.
The second case that we analyzed was the Scopes Trial. With this court case, there was no question on whether John Scopes was guilty for violating the Butler Law. However, the court case became a battle ground between evolutionists v. religious fundamentalists over whether evolution or creationism was correct. We then discussed whether evolution and/or creationism should be taught within public schools. Most agreed that evolution should be taught in the schools as a theory.
Since today's class focused on court cases and we argued the idea of whether our justice system has abided by the idea of "innocent until proven guilty," I would like you to research an instance on the Internet relating to an organization that has worked to prove a criminal's innocence after the criminal has been convicted. Please access the Innocence Project at innocenceproject.org and browse the profiles of criminals that have been proven to be innocent years later. Pick one of the people in the list and answer the following questions in your notebook:
1.) What was the person's name, where was the crime, and what was his sentence?
2.) What was the crime that the person committed and why was he "falsely" accused?
3.) How was the person found out to be innocent?
4.) Compare and contrast this case to the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. How is this case similar to the one that we have learned in class?
Please email me with any questions that you have. Your next test is going to be on January 9. Have a great day!
