Washington and Dubois Debate

The philosophy of Booker T. Washington and W.E.B. Dubois is significantly different. Using what we learned in class, pick a side as if you were living at the turn of the 20th century. Which side do you think is the best way to gain the rights entitled to African Americans. Please use the comment button below to argue your side AND REACT TO WHAT OTHER PEOPLE SAY. I want to see some good arguements, but keep it appropriate (like the current events)

  1. I feel that the approach of Booker T. Washington is too kind for the situation he is trying to face. Sure, sugar-coating things and making it seem like his point would benefit everyone is nice and calm and may make people listen, but in reality he is settling for something less than the natural born right of every American, black or white, which is to have the right to better oneself. He is not allowing African Americans to gain the knowledge they need to eventually gain the high status in life they deserve. In settling for the laboring jobs, he is settling for what they had in the past and want freedom from and want to better themselves from. It just doesn't seem fair to put these restrictions to lower paying and lower ranking jobs to try and simply over time please everyone. I feel that Dubois has a strong power in his tone that really illustrates the strength and determination of the African Americans to gain all the rights they should have. I feel this stance was essential to show that the African Americans meant business and demanded their equal right. Due to this straight to the facts and demanding attitude, I support his point of view more so because he demands what is right right away and will not settle for anything less than the best. He is putting his foot down and letting his voice be heard that equality needs to happen right away and it needs to ensure complete equality of all opportunities for all people.

  2. I agree with what Deanna is saying. Booker T Washington was very kind in his approach. But I do see also how it makes sense to ease the situation and try to blend new ideas into society. But this also would have taken too long. Maybe the people around you would be affected by your kindness, but it would not affect the country in a drastic way. It is important to stand up for rights and make sure your voice is heard. Dubois was just demanding the rights they every American should have.
